Top 5 best musicals (in our opinion)

Growing up watching or acting in high school plays, we were introduced to many different musicals. With more on stage musicals getting turned into movies, many people are discovering and enjoying the creative world of musical theater. There are over 300 Broadway musicals, but here is some of our favorites.

  1. Hamilton: "the 10 dollar founding father" got his own musical written, composed, and made by Lin Manuel Miranda. This musical had a unique way of telling the story of Alexander Hamilton, from beginning to end. With the music, acting, dancing, and singing, in the 70th tony awards, Hamilton got a record-breaking 16 nominations in 13 categories, ultimately winning 11 awards, including Best musical. Due to the many awards, the endless accolades from the critics, and the great reputation of the musical since it was released in 2015, Hamilton has (probably) become one of the most popular musicals.

  2. Dear Evan Hansen: Evan Hansen is a young boy with social anxiety that yearns to make friendships and connection with his peers. When a tragedy happens, he fabricates a friendship to be part of something that he did not earn. First produced in 2015, Dear Evan Hansen is a tony and Grammy-winning musical that is both deeply personal and profoundly contemporary, that connects to the viewers. The heart-wrenching songs and amazing acting will entrance you into the story.

  3. Rent: a rock musical about a group of young bohemians struggling to survive in the east village of New York City from 1989 to 1990, with sexuality, love, drugs, paying rent, and life with an illness looming over them. The audience learns about the struggles that the characters in the musical have to go through, as well as people in real life. This brilliant musical helped raise over 2 million dollars for the Jonathan Larson Performing Arts Foundation. This award-winning musical was one of the longest-running shows on Broadway, lasting 12 years before closing in 2008.

  4. Chicago: Chicago is an American jazz music-filled musical about two rival murderesses locked up in Cook County Jail after murdering their husbands, waiting for their trial in the 1920s. The two being quite the roar in that time, made them to be “murder celebrities”, so they fight for the fame that will keep them out of punishment. The comedy crime Broadway musical was first opened in 1975 and ran for over two years on Broadway. The revival of this musical opened in 1996, and is still ongoing, and even won a Tony award for Best Revival of a musical. With the uplifting music and dances and acting, it's no wonder Chicago has won Tony awards, Olivier awards, and a Grammy.

  5. Hairspray: Taking place in Baltimore during the 1960s, Tracy Turnblad, a plus-sized teenage girl, has a dream to dance on The Corny Collins show. Thanks to her friends she meets in detention teaching her new dance moves, she gets a chance to show off her new moves and wins a spot on the show. Tracy uses her influence to help prevent further racism on the show, and to help change the future and try to help stop discrimination. There’s uplifting music, breathtaking choreography, and great acting. Hairspray the musical is a Tony award-winning show with romance, comedy, and many other elements that explains why this show was awarded best musical in 2003.
